Understanding Parametric Shape Analysis

چکیده
Shape analysis is a technique for providing static guarantees of properties of the heap during the execution of a program that manipulates dynamically allocated storage though destructive updating of pointers. It is interesting because of the widespread use of pointers, because of the difficulty of programming with pointers, and because of the intricate and severe errors that may follow from flawed software. Recently, the research field of parametric shape analysis has emerged, utilizing first order predicate logic with transitive closure to provide a modular and expressible shape analysis generation framework. The logic approach is well suited for shape analysis and the framework has proven useful for verifying many interesting properties. Many results in the field have been published during the last few years, and surveying and understanding the field is a challenging task. This thesis aims at providing a comprehensive overview and discussion of the area.
